Tom McDermott

Tom McDermott is a stellar young professional rider from Wagga in New South Wales who is dedicated to his love of horses. Until recently, all of Tom's horses had been ex-racehorses that he has produced with the help of his father Greg, who is a racehorse trainer and Tom’s coach. Greg represented Australia in Showjumping at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul and a World Cup Final in 1990 at Dortmund. Many of Tom’s horses have been sold onto other junior riders, young riders and overseas to finance his travelling, competitions and the purchase of new horses.

Tom has his sights set on becoming Australia’s next equestrian Olympian and he commenced competition show jumping in 2005 at the tender age of 12. Now, at the age of only 17, his list of achievements is nothing short of spectacular! Some highlights from Tom's list of achievements include:-

• 2006 Australian Junior Showjumping Champion - Tom won this title on his first attempt, aged 12
• 2006 Australian Junior Champion
• 2007 Member of the Australian Team which attended the South African International Friendship Games held in Johannesburg. Tom was the only competitor to jump clean in the teams event, he was also the winner of one class and placed in three others riding borrowed horses
• 2007 EFA NSW Junior of the Year
• 2008 Australian Junior Champion
• 2008 EFA NSW Junior of the Year
• 2009 Equestrain Youth Olympic team - Bronze medal in the teams event
• 2010 Member of the National Young Rider Squad
• 2010 Awarded New South Wales Institute of Sport Emerging Athlete Scholarship
• 2010 Silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Tom was the only equestrian rider selected to represent Australia
• 2010 Australian Junior Showjumping Champion
• 2010 Australian Young Rider Showjumping Champion
